Hendrik Voogd ging in 1788 naar Rome met steun van een Amsterdamse mecenas. Hij sloot zich daar aan bij de internationale kunstenaarskolonie. Dit schilderij, het vroegste dat van hem bekend is, laat zijn specialisme prachtig zien: het parkachtige landschap rondom Rome vol antieke resten, geschilderd in een koel helder licht.
In 1788 the financial support of an Amsterdam art patron allowed Hendrik Voogd to travel to Rome, where he joined the colony of international artists. This painting, the artist’s earliest known work, is a good example of his speciality: the campagna landscape around Rome, dotted with ancient remains, painted in a cool, clear light.
